[SEF] Favorite Books
When I worked I had a whole lot of time to read, one of my favorite books was Ender's Game, by Orson Scott Card, IMO the movie lost a lot of meaning when Locke and Demosthenes were not included. The first Science Fiction I ever read was 'Have Space Suit Will Travel', by Robert Anson Heinlein, the girl next door introduced me to 'Stranger in a Strange Land' and love in the same night -and FN math. I read 'The Past Through Tomorrow ' on the way to my oil war and 'I Will Fear No Evil' on my way home -a copy of 'Stranger in a Strange Land' in my carry on; for me books are like music and they can bring back memories both good and bad.
Maybe this thread will be better suited for a Lover of Silence I know...
What is your favorite book...

Riveting, a real page turner; I couldn't put it down...
...mainly because my 6 year grandson wouldn't let me.

Re: [SEF] Favorite Books
When I heard they were making a movie named Exodus I thought it would be a remake of this movie...
...instead it is just another sand and sandals action adventure.
C'est la vie, chérir'....

You'll enjoy it. In 1961 when it was written there were many who wanted it banned as indecent...

Re: [SEF] Favorite Books
The Man, when written was a very explosive book; when I brought it home my father -god rest his soul- demanded my mother burn it. My mother, to her credit, told him to go f@@k himself and a young rebel was born. My High School Library did manage to get it removed from the shelves, which was sad....

This is one of the best SciFi series of books that has never been made into a film. There are rumors that Jonathan Nolan is writing and producing a TV series based on the Foundation Trilogy for HBO.

Re: [SEF] Favorite Books
I don't usually do this, but over on the eUSA Forums this thread, Bad SciFi/Fantasy Movies based on books, has caused some controversy.
Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.
With any fantasy fiction the story teller must get the reader to suspend all rational thought and believe in the existence of the universe the teller has created. One of the things the Grand Masters of Science Fiction achieved was a simple writing device: timelines. Two of the greats, Isaac Asimov and Robert Heinlein, used it to create extremely believable almost seamless universes; the above thread made me think about the importance of timing.
I think LotR screwed the pooch when they did not make 'The Hobbit' a part of a 4 movie LotR. Seems to me that J. R. R. Tolkien wrote 'The Hobbit' first for a reason and it was too short for 3 movies on it's own.
One last question before I leave, how much of these two SciFI greats work would be published under Fantasy in todays market?
...ing off all the ham.

Harper Lee 'extremely hurt' by Mockingbird sequel claims
Truman Capote was this woman's protege, this story reminds me of the movie 'Finding Forrester'; I would love to rummage through her office -my bet is there are many, many filing cabinets full of her writing....

Re: [SEF] Favorite Books
I'm working my way through the Discworld series, and enjoying it hugely.
For Jasher, do you know these?
I've only read this first one, but they are a great favorite of a friend of mine who is very into graphic novels.

Re: [SEF] Favorite Books
Is this a topic about science fiction books or books in general? Not really sure, as English is not my first language.
This one would fit in anyway:
Who do you think was better at describing a dystopian future? Aldous Huxley or George Orwell? And whose book(s) better described traits of our society which are still relevant today? I'd love to hear your opinion.

Re: [SEF] Favorite Books
Any book and George Orwell...the proof is all around you.
My girlfriend read this to me the summer I spent in bed with a shattered leg...and don't ask, it was totally stupid and totally male.
Yes, she laughed so hard she cried when it happened; after all it's not funny till there's blood -n'est-ce pas, Chéri?
